Marco
Battaglia was born in 1969 in Milan where he finished his high school
studies in the classics and went on to study law and philosophy at the
State University. His early musical training on guitar took place at
the Civica Scuola di Musica under the guidance of Vittorio Casagrande.
In 1995, he graduated from the Conservatory and went on to specialize
in the interpretation of 19th century music paying
close attention to matters of performance practice.
He participated in several courses using original 19th century
instruments. Among the many internationally renowned performers
and educators that influenced his musical background the following can
be cited: O. Ghiglia, R. Chiesa, P. O’Brien, C. Wilson and D. Russell.
He has an active performing career in Italy and abroad, both as a soloist
and with orchestras, as well as a teacher, lecturer and researcher.
In 1998, he debuted with success at “Carlo Felice” Theatre in
Genoa where performed (also as a duo with a violin once owned
by Paganini and bought by his pupil Camillo Sivori) on a guitar
that belonged to Giuseppe Mazzini, the Italian
Patriot (property of the Istituto Mazziniano from the city of Genoa).
As concert promoter Marco Battaglia had the guitar refurbished. The
instrument’s first modern concert was played at the Fondazione
Stelline of Milan and the performance was repeated several
times, amongst these one in Turin (Circolo degli Artisti
- Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano). The program featured music
by composers quoted in Mazzini’s letters and “Philosophy of music”.
His concerts have been held in hundreds of cities and by many prestigious
institutions, to name a few, Paris (UNESCO
Headquarters), Bonn (Sparkasse), Basel
(Societa’ Dante Alighieri, Schmiedenhof…), Lausanne, Bern,
Biel (Neuhaus Museum), Luzern, Aarau, Neuchâtel (Centre des Terreaux),
Olten, Locarno (Palazzo Borghese), and Milan (over
60 concerts for Museo Teatrale alla Scala,
Castello Sforzesco, Societa’ Umanitaria, Civiche
Raccolte Storiche...) also in Monza (Teatro della Villa Reale), and
the International Festivals in Varese and Vigevano, Magenta, Campione,
Genoa (Museo del Risorgimento, Biblioteca Berio...), “ChitarraImperia”
Spring Festival and Seminars, Festival Carniarmonie,

In
2001, he was the artistic director for the concert series “Concerti
per gli angeli” at San Angelo’s church in Milan. Pizzicato Verlag Helvetia
has published his revisions. Specialized magazines, such as, ‘The
Classic Voice’ and some of the most important newspapers in
Italy have written about him, to name a few, ‘Corriere della
Sera’ and ‘La Stampa’. Paolo Gallarati
of ‘La Stampa’ wrote “Battaglia performs with grace and taste,
plays with the subtitles…; …the pages… that Marco Battaglia performed
wonderfully, creating clinking resonances on the instrument during the
Aries “Italiana in Algeri,” of “Otello” and of “Armida” with taste for
an intimate sound, almost secret”. He has carried out interviews
and recorded his interpretations for private European radio
and for R.A.I. television and radio, some nationally
transmitted live. A plethora of concert invitations and master
classes from 2004 will bring Mr. Battaglia to Italy
(Pavia (Teatro Fraschini), Mantoa (Conservatory), Novara (Teatro Coccia),
Milan, Genoa (Paganini International Congress), Busseto (Sala Barezzi),
Cagliari (Conservatory)...). Switzerland (Aarau, Freiburg, Basel, Luzern,
Thun, Winterthur, Biel…), Germany, France, Greece (Athens, Volos…),
Slovenia and Australia (Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney…). |
